The types of batteries used in electric vehicles are made for an extended life that lasts around eight years or 100,000 miles. Some EV battery technology can last 12-15 years in moderate climates.

There are four types of batteries in electric cars: nickel-metal hydride, ultracapacitors, lead-acid, and lithium-ion. Let’s explore each of these in greater detail below:

  • Nickel-Meta Hydride Batteries: These kinds of batteries are commonly found in hybrid-electric vehicles but are also seen in some all-electric vehicles. These vehicles don’t get power from an external plug-in as they use fuel to recharge their batteries. Among some of the benefits of these vehicles are:
  • A longer lifecycle than lithium-ion or lead-acid batteries
  • High cost
  • High self-discharge rate
  • Generates significant heat

As these are less effective for rechargeable vehicles, you will mostly find them in hybrid electric vehicles.

  • Ultracapacitor Batteries: These are not standard batteries; they are secondary storage devices in electric vehicles since they help electrochemical batteries level their load. They also provide extra power when accelerating and regenerating braking.
  • Lead-Acid Batteries: These types of batteries are only used in electric vehicles to supplement other battery loads. They are safe, inexpensive, reliable, and high-powered. Yet, their shorter lifespan and poor cold temperature make it harder to use in other EVs. Higher-powered lead-acid batteries are in development at present.
  • Lithium-ion Batteries: The most common batteries found in electric vehicles, they are known for having a higher power-to-weight ratio, excellent temperature performance, and higher energy efficiency. They can store a lot of energy for their weight, which is ideal as it allows EVs to drive further on a single charge. Due to their “low self-discharge” rate, they can hold a full charge longer than other batteries.
