History of BMW M

 
BMW started the M division in 1972 to create high-performance vehicles for racing. Only one year after its inception, the BMW 3.0L CSL won the Nürburgring 24 Hours. Other historical highlights of BMW M history include:

• The BMW M1 is introduced in 1978.
• The M5 debuts as the first ever street-legal high-performance vehicle in 1984.
• In 1997, the BMW M Roadster arrives on Roslyn streets.
• The BMW M3 Coupe releases in 2000 and becomes a classic in high-performance automotive.
• The BMW X6 M is introduced in 2015, fusing race car and coupe design.
• As for the future, the BMW M division is focusing on EV design!

History of the BMW M Logo Through the Years

The BMW M logo features an italicized M in silver that is preceded by the tilted bars—one in blue, one in purple, and one in red. The blue denotes BMW’s home province of Bavaria. The purple bar symbolizes collaboration between the blue and red bars—a sense of passage. The red references the color of Texaco, an American oil company that closely collaborated with BMW motorsports in the early years of the division, though they no longer have a partnership.
