How to Check Tire Tread Depth

If you want your tires to perform at their best and as safely as possible on the roads of Syosset and Roslyn, it is important that they have enough tread left to grip the pavement properly. Wondering how to check tire tread depth? In this guide, Rallye BMW shows you how to check tire tread at home so you know if your tires are ready for the road ahead. 

Recommended Tire Tread Depth 

Most new tires range between 10/32 to 11/32 of an inch (about a third of an inch) of tire tread depth. Larger tires or snow tires may offer even more tread depth to tackle treacherous driving conditions. 

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) recommends that tires be replaced when the tread depth reaches 2/32 of an inch. Why is that? When your tires do not have enough tread depth, they are more likely to slip, increasing the risk of collisions, hydroplaning, and more. With less than 2/32 of an inch of tread depth, your tires are no longer safe for driving. 

Check Tire Tread at Home: The Penny Test

While a ruler will provide more accurate measurements, you can check tire tread at home using a penny. 

1. Insert a penny with Lincoln head-first into a tire tread groove.
2. Check to see if Lincoln’s head is covered and no longer visible between the treads.
3. If you can see all of Lincoln’s head, that means your tire treads are 2/32 inches deep or less. It is now time to replace your current set of tires. 
4. Be sure to repeat these steps for each tire, and check multiple locations on each tire to ensure there are no areas of the tire that are more worn than others. 

How to Check Tire Tread Using Other Methods

You may not have a penny on hand, but you can still inspect your tire tread depth.

• Tread Wear Bars: Many tires feature built-in tread wear bars. If the bars are flush with the tire ribs that surround them, your tires will need to be replaced. 

• Tread Depth Gauge: You can find a tire tread depth gauge at your local auto parts store. This is another more accurate method than using a penny.
